The "Mark O'Connor String Camp" will take place for a five days, July 26 - 30, 2010 at the Society for Ethical Culture in Manhattan. Located at 64th and Central Park West, in the heart of New York City! This beautiful 120-year-old concert hall and school was host to the first New York City camp in 2009! The Mark O'Connor team pulled out all the stops for our inaugural year. The faculty was one of the best collection we have ever assembled. And the faculty concerts took place in the same hall used by the Chamber Players of Lincoln Center. The acoustics are ideal for our concerts. The Fieldston School next door (in the same building) has graciously allowed us the use of their classrooms for our events. There will be two very large social rooms for guardians, teachers and students. After the daytime classes have completed, everyone can attend the faculty concerts each night and participate in the student concert the final evening. The 800-seat concert hall is gorgeous. We will have enough seats to invite audiences into the balcony area free of charge to see these special concerts. Our "campers" will have the orchestra seating on the floor, exclusively. On the same city block is inexpensive overnight housing at the YMCA. There is also higher priced hotels in the area within walking distance to the camp. There is a very large social room at the Y that the Camp will rent out for the week beginning at 10:00 p.m. for after hours jamming and socializing (for participants only). The students will have access to the pool and the exercise rooms all week, included in the cost of rooms if staying at the YMCA.
Directly across the street from our venue is Central Park for picnic lunches, recreation or taking in the beautiful scenes that are midtown NYC. We are also a block from Lincoln Center and the best restaurants in Manhattan. There are many inexpensive food options available in the same area.
We will also include a Teacher's Training program at our NYC camp featuring O'Connor's Method Book I & II authored by Mark O'Connor.
There will be In Service Credit, and Professional Development Hours for teachers enrolling in the 5 day program at the NYC camp. There will be two sessions per day of training. A 3rd session is free for the teacher to attend another class each day. This is program is offered at ($300).
Registration openend January 9th, 2010
GETTING TO NYC ON A LIMITED BUDGET
Here are some tips for saving money when traveling to and staying in New York City for the String Camp this summer. The YMCA rooms (located on the same block as Camp) averaged around $90 last summer, and if you signed up with someone to share a room, you can get that down to about $45 possibly (Write us if you are looking for a roommate at the Y). There is also is an inexpensive diner at the YMCA, where one can get hamburgers, hot dogs, cheese steaks...and the average price for a hot meal and drink last summer was about $8 to $10. NYC is accessible by Amtrak from most places in the N.E. easily. Flights in to NYC on the average can be cheaper than flying in to many American cites. If you fly in to the John F Kennedy International Airport you can take the AirTrain and the NYC Subway all the way to within walking distance of the YMCA and Camp for $7 (current price). Flying in to Newark International Airport you can take the NJ Transit for about the same costs. Flying into LaGuardia Airport can be more expensive getting in to the city as there is no train, but an inexpensive bus ride is possible. if you are on a tight budget, following some of these steps can help.
