After more than 16 years of directing the Mark O'Connor String Camps
and Conferences, first in Tennessee, and later in California, I have begun
expanding this model to serve even more students with a New York
String Camp.
The New York version was a huge success July, 2009 held at
a beautiful venue, the Ethical Culture Fieldston School & the Society for
Ethical Culture right in the heart of Midtown in New York City and just a
block from Lincoln Center.
Scheduled for 2nd annual Camp in 2010 (July 26-30) the String Camp
in NYC reached over 200 students in 2009 experiencing a week of
intensive training and instruction in a multitude of string playing styles
from myself, as well as from some of the world's finest performers and
teachers, each in their specialty area.
The areas offered for instruction include Jazz, Classical, Folk Fiddling and World Music.
Each student gets to explore a no-holds-barred intensive educational environment.
Students will try out new musical styles and techniques under expert
guidance, all the while, playing informally for their peers, hearing
performances by their teachers and fellow students in the evenings,
and having their daytime experiences put into action – Truly a life
changing program for many of our students throughout the years!
Here are just a few of the comments made by students at the 2009
New York City String Camp:
COMMENTS FROM 2009 STUDENTS ATTENDING CAMP
"Bravo!! Please take your time and recover from your incredible gift to
the city this past week."
"You, and the incredible faculty certainly gave us all a week to remember."
" Mark. . . You have inspired so many to inspire others. Thanks to all who
worked hard to make it a roaring success! Thank you!"
"Mark- thanks for your inspiration, vision, and creativity! Tonight your incredible
students, teachers, guests and YOU raised the roof and took us to another galaxy!
It was a privilege to be there!!! Congratulations. Blown away."
"It was the best week of my summer. :) Can't wait for next year!"
"We had a wonderful time, and participated in everything. Ben went to all of the
advanced classes, and took all of yours. He loved working on your concerto,
the caprices and all of your music, with you! The evening concerts were amazing.
After 10 years of being involved in the classical music community, we are so glad
you have expanded our horizons by bringing this camp to the northeast!"
"Let's make NYC the "Aspen of the East" in summer music camps!"
"Congratulations on inaugurating what I'm sure will become a unique and highly
valued institution in the history of music education and performance and also a
prize for New York City. I feel very happy and lucky to have been a part of it."
"I have become more inspired and in-touch with the music around me like never before.
It really touches me to hear you talk about this camp because I know that you
really started it for us. You, sir, have achieved this week more than you may know."

The NYC Camp offered a Teacher's Training program with 40 teachers enrolled using the O'Connor Violin Method Book I and II. This program offered Professional Development Hours for teachers enrolling in the 5 day program at the NYC camp endorsed by the New York American String Teachers Association (NYASTA). We will hold this course at the Camp again in 2010.
Forty-Five (45) Professional Development hours will be awarded through the New York American String Teachers Association, a major affiliate of the New York State School Music Association. Teachers should check with their respective school districts regarding acceptance of professional development hours.
TEACHER'S TRAINING COURSE ($300)
Pam Wiley - O'Connor Violin Method
This course in an alternative to the regular camp tuition of $650. This course is for those who are interested in teaching beginning students, participants will receive credits (in service and professional development). The materials covered will be based on Mark O'Connor's new Method Book I and II released November 2009. The new O'Connor Violin Method is a comprehensive manual that takes the student from the very beginning, featuring tunes from the Americas. The two sessions per day course will allow one class per day with one of the other Camp instructors being featured for the 3rd period. Mark O'Connor will sit in on some of the classes.

Created in the hills of Tennessee 15 years ago, with a successful
transition to the university campus setting in San Diego, I hope you
will agree that a unique string conference of this magnitude (already
reaching 450 students annually) deserves the opportunity to thrive in
the vibrant musical forum of New York City. Since its inception, it
has become an internationally known event featured on such prominent
media as CBS Sunday Morning, the Los Angeles Times and the New York Times.
This program is not limited to young people, in fact, many adult professional
musicians and teachers alike expand their musical horizons as
participants of the Camp, and in turn impact many more young
people around the country and other parts of the world.
When our String Camp has concluded, the legacy continues.
The interesting mixture of style, sound and technique have begun to
affect the music scene with new ideas, compositions and playing techniques.
My work with Yo-Yo Ma has created a big demand for the cello to be included at
these Camps as well. It is our hope that all of the string
family will find this a great place in New York City to learn more about
music, recognize the potential of music making, and what reaching for
the unknown in artistic endeavors can do for feeding the musical soul.
Mark O'Connor - New York, 2008.
Registration began January 9th, 2010 at www.markoconnor.com. Tuition will be $650 for violin students studying in class settings with over a dozen instructors. The tuition will be $500 for viola and cello studying in class settings with two instructors for the week; lodging and food will be the responsibility of each student.
