Third Street Music School Settlement’s violin faculty has enthusiastically embraced Mark O’Connor’s violin method and its Americas-based repertoire. The faculty will use the Method to complement and enrich all traditional and Suzuki-based individual and group violin instruction at the Main School and in the School & Community Partnerships. Additionally, the Method’s repertoire will be played by the School’s many performance ensembles throughout the year.

The Third Street Music School writes this about the O’Connor Violin Method: Mark O’Connor, considered one of the world’s best violinists and fiddlers, has created a new method of violin study based on his new American School of Violin Playing. While utilizing classic violin technique and theory, the Mark O’Connor Violin Method adds uniquely American elements such as jazz, Latin, rock, folk, ragtime and improvisation. The goal: That young people everywhere fall in love with playing music! The O’Connor Violin Method at Lucy Moses

The Mark O’Connor violin method explores American musical literature from Mexico, Canada and every region of the United States, and pulls from varied musical styles – classical, folk, Latin, rock, ragtime and more.

GROUP CLASS
This year-long Mark O’Connor violin method class will cover the fist volume of fiddle tunes in the method book beginning with “Boil ‘Em Cabbage Down.” Students will discuss the historical background of each song and learn beginning improvisational skills that coincide with each tune. Students must be competent in at least the first half of Suzuki book one (or level equivalent).
Class size: maximum of 8.
